WebYou have to redirect stdout first before duplicating it into stderr; if you duplicate it first, stderr will just point to what stdout originally pointed at. Bash, zsh and some other shells also provide the shortcut ls good bad &>/dev/null which is convenient on the command-line but should be avoided in scripts which are intended to be portable. csh is significantly more limited than bash when it comes to file redirection. In csh, you can redirect stdout with the usual > operator, you can redirect both stdout and stderr with the >& operator, you can pipe stdout and stderr with the & operator, but there is no single operator to redirect stderr alone.. The command above takes care of this by redirecting both the file_2.txt as I explained.
