The spacer uses a metal to metal seal and relies on clamp load. You need to take that spacer out and check the back of it for damage where it contacts the sprocket shaft and seals. On 78-84 models, regardless if they are factory chain or belt, the manual says to install them with the lip towards the flywheel.
